House is a series of photographs of homes in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The photographs explore the desire and perfection embedded in the Phoenix landscape. Much of the suburban infrastructure is a reference to something else: the lawn is a miniature version of an open pasture; topiaries are “perfected” version of shrubs and bushes. There is a sense of desire built into the idealization of the landscapes and homes within the suburban environment. The House imagery presents simplified scenes enhancing the sense of beauty and perfection embodied in these places. The photographs have a toy-like quality creating tension and ambiguity in scale and place. The result merges fantasy and reality, investigating beauty within the suburban environment. Phoenix, a desert city whose large constructed landscape masquerades its desert location, is a rich subject for this work.
